Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. will award $15,000 in scholarships to 15 qualified applicants who enroll in a technical career program at Danville Community College.

The company said it wants to develop a pool of skilled mechanics, electricians and pipe fitters to help staff the Danville plant’s maintenance department.

“Goodyear has always supported education efforts in the Danville area,” Human Resources Manager John Rhodes said in a prepared statement.

Nine of the 15 scholarships are reserved for qualified family members of current Goodyear employees. Goodyear will give the other six $1,000 awards to external candidates from Danville Public Schools and Pittsylvania County Schools, according to a selection process determined by school officials.

Scholarship applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average.

Candidates also must demonstrate an interest and aptitude in a technical field, meet specific attendance requirements and have no significant disciplinary incidents from high school.

The application deadline is Aug. 8. Students interested in applying for the scholarship can contact the Danville Community College Educational Foundation at (434) 797-8437 or e-mail .
