Former Halifax County sheriff indicted

SOUTH BOSTON – The former sheriff of Halifax County was indicted last week on a charge of computer trespassing.

A multi-jurisdiction grand jury impaneled at Halifax County Circuit Court indicted Jeffrey Oakes on Nov. 18.

According to the indictment, Oakes “did unlawfully and with malicious intent, remove, alter, disable and erase computer data, computer programs, and computer software from a computer belonging to Halifax County…”

The incident occurred on Dec. 27, 2007. 

Computer trespassing is a misdemeanor carrying a maximum sentence of 12 months in jail and a $2,000 fine. Special Prosecutor Bob Bushnell said a jury trial is likely.

Oakes’ arraignment is scheduled for Dec. 9.
