An error in tabulating absentee ballots in Pittsylvania County on Monday gave U.S. Rep. Virgil Goode 407 additional votes, but still not enough to overcome Democratic challenger Tom Perriello.

Registrar Jenny Lee Sanders said the error was caused by not entering the figures properly into the computer system. She said the mistake was caught by the Virginia State Board of Elections, among others.

“The mistake was not checking behind myself,” Sanders said.

For a time Monday, Goode was credited with 2,354 absentee votes to 1,874 for Perriello – a total higher than the number of people who voted absentee in Pittsylvania County. The adjustment now puts Goode at 1,639 absentee votes to 1,497 for Perriello.

Perriello, who claimed victory Friday in the 5th District House race, has a 745-vote advantage with 159,712 votes to 158,967 votes for Goode, according to the latest calculation from the Board of Elections.

The Perriello campaign said Monday it didn’t understand why numbers were still being counted.

“We’re very confused,” Perriello’s communications director, Jessica Barba, said Monday. “From our perspective, we thought the canvass was closed.”

Barba said she was under the impression all the canvasses had been signed by the registrars and wasn’t sure where any errors could have come from.

“All the canvasses last week had representatives from each of our campaigns,” she said. “We weren’t told about any change.”

Jerr Rosenbaum, Goode’s chief of staff, said Monday the campaign is concerned about irregularities in counting the vote and is paying attention to changes. Goode has said he does not plan on calling for a recount until the results are certified Nov. 24 by the Board of Elections.

Perriello announced Monday that he will attend freshman orientation for new members of Congress next week in Washington.

Rosenbaum had no comment on Perriello’s plan to attend the congressional orientation.

Perriello has a meeting set Sunday with House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer.

“(I’m) very excited to get up there,” he said.

Dick Cranwell, chairman of the Democratic Party of Virginia, was already celebrating Thursday before Perriello announced his victory and called the Ivy Democrat to congratulate him.

“Tom did a tremendous job early on in the campaign and has been just an outstanding candidate,” he said late Thursday afternoon. “I think he probably has run one of the best campaigns I’ve ever seen.”

Cranwell added that having Barack Obama on the top of the ticket and hugely popular Mark Warner in the Senate slot certainly helped Perriello, but attributed his victory largely to the candidate himself and the campaign’s grassroots efforts.

Well lets go Tom. Maybe he needs to hire all gays to work his Danville office. Maybe that would make the Danville Register and Bee do a story. ( No I don’t think so, since it is Tom) We can also have a parade down Main Street in front of the Last Capitol of the Confederacy and see how many people come out with their confederate flags as well. Lets go… I am ready.

Tom is sooo great. He firmly believes in gay rights. He will do so well that I bet with his help VA will pass a law allowing gays and lesbians to marry. We love you Tom!!!

Well If Virgil is being condemned for going to a fund raiser, then why isn’t Obama and McCain being critized for having a forum / debate on 9/11. It was televised for the world to see. They didn’t seem to mind doing something different. I am so sick and tired of hearing about 9/11.

TOM PERRIELLO, MEMBER, US HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, FIFTH DISTRICT, VIRGINIA. I LIKE IT! IF GOODE HAD SHOWN SOME RESPECT FOR SEPTEMBER 11TH, & RATHER THAN PARTY WITH HIS GUCCI SHOED LOBBYIST WEASELS ON THAT SACRED DAY, HE MIGHT HAVE PICKED UP 800 MORE VOTES AND BEEN ABLE TO SLITHER BACK INTO OFFICE. BUT HE DIDN’T, AND THE VOTERS REMEMBERED. GOOD RIDDANCE!

EelteeJust why do you believe all of Virgil’s lies?
Tom never practiced law in NY and Virgil knows darn well he never did.
Yes Virgil should have won hands down just like George Allen should have won hands down.
But then most people except the die hards of the southside, do not like bigots and racists.

Maybe Virgil didn’t run the right campaign, but he and many of us never thought the people of the southside would fall for a smooth talking NY Lawyer either.

It should have been no contest; Virgil should have won hands down, but then, Perriallo talked a good line, smooth talked his way to a win????, and if not, mistakes were kept being found that would put him on top; yea right.

It wouldn’t surprise me that there are still uncounted votes out there.  I believe, and I have a right to believe, that no matter how many votes come in for Goode, at least one more will miraculously be found for Periallo.  He is a democrat isn’t he??

If Virgil does come up losing, we all lose and it will be because of the crap Perriello was talking. He needs to go back to his foreign countries where he was helping the foreign people with their legal problems.

Yes, he needs an investigation of “Why he lost 5% or more of the vote in every county and city in the 5th District”.

And that had nothing to do with errors. It has to do with the worst re-election campaign Virgil has ever run.

The whole election was crooked. Virgil should have won. Look at the virgin state board of election web site at the errors that were made. I say the re-count will make Virgil the winner if not he needs to ask for an investigation.
