Lorenza Deshazor Jones will spend the rest of his life in prison for the April 21 stabbing death of 21-year-old Precious Saunders, who was his girlfriend at the time.

Jones, 20, admitted to killing Saunders in a Sept. 16 hearing in Danville Circuit Court. The sentencing hearing was held Thursday.

Commonwealth’s Attorney William Fuller III brought several members of Saunders’ family before Judge Joseph W. Milam Jr. to describe how the murder had affected their lives.

Saunders’ mother, grandmothers, sister and an aunt talked about how much they missed her, about the many times Jones threatened to kill her and how her 2-year-old son still asks where his mother is.

“I think about her every hour of every day,” said Lalita Martin, Saunders’ mother who has custody of the child.

“I don’t want my grandson to ever have to lay eyes on that man (Jones) again,” she said. “In this lifetime, I never want to lay eyes on him.”

There was a brief outburst from a member of Saunders’ family, who left the courtroom in tears as she asked why Jones was looking at her and smiling.

Jones’ attorney, Shannon Taylor, of the Boone Beale law firm in Richmond, huddled with Jones briefly, telling him not to look at the victim’s family.

Members of Jones’ family told the judge about his difficult upbringing, mental health counseling he received in his teens, the murder-suicide of his parents in 2006, and the time in 2007 when Jones was shot five times.

Michael Jeffrey, a licensed counselor, told the court that Jones suffers from a major depressive disorder with psychotic features and post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of those events. He also said Jones regularly used marijuana and cocaine.

Taylor told the judge Jones’ sentence deserved to be at the low end of the sentencing guidelines due to mitigating circumstances and called the murder a crime of passion.

Fuller said Jones chose to take drugs and chose to murder Saunders. The prosecutor said the killing was premeditated based on witnesses saying Jones had been threatening Saunders for a month.

He pointed out that when Saunders’ sister left the stand, Jones’ was grinning and showing no remorse.

“Your honor, it would be hard to find a case where anyone was more brutally beaten than this,” Fuller said, after he had listed the more than 60 knife and blunt-force injuries Saunders suffered as Jones attacked her at their Audobon Drive apartment. “He deserves absolutely no consideration for mitigation.”

Jones also was given the opportunity to address the court, and smiled at his attorney before rising. He wore the black-and-gray striped uniform he has worn while being held at Martinsville City Jail.

“I loved this girl; I got it tatted on my chest,” Jones said as both his and Saunders’ family sobbed. “I gave her three things not to do and she chose to do all three of them. You see what happened. Whatever you do is OK with me and I can get out of here.”

Milam said there was no evidence the murder was a “snap decision,” while there was evidence the murder was premeditated. He also said Jones showed no sign of remorse and that whatever mental struggles Jones had were outweighed by the premeditation.

I am not putting it on Jesus if you had READ what was said (I’m not referring to what Mr.Jones did) I am referring to the comments about others wishing death on him. I am simply saying that is not right because the same way God will give him his last judgement is the same way we will receive ours. It doesn’t matter what the sin is no sin is greater than any other sin. I am simply saying it is not up to us to judge anyone God will do what has to do in the end.

Precious was my friend, and as hers I hope that he gets EVERYTHING he deserves. God will punish him 10 fold and that is what brings me comfort.  R.I.P.a.H Precious

you are entitled to your beliefs and I am to mine. Did not God cast Cain out of Eden? Did God not destroy Sodom and Gomhorra? Does it not say in the Bible “ an eye for an eye”? Someone who was as vicious as this man was appears to be full of evil and beyond and type of help. I am a Christian, but,in this case, all of the criteria for the death penalty.

This is for newsnonsense who posted below. Yes everything is based on WWJD. That what the Bible says you are suppose to do. No its not a weird things its a I believe in God thing. And as far as your tax payer supporting someone for the rest of there lives, If you di your research you would know that it cost less to support an inmate for life than to carry out the death penalty. So no it isnt any more expensive to have him sit in jail til he dies and realize what he has done. Maybe his time in jail will allow him to come to Jesus which is exactly what he needs.

It seems that if ever a case deserved the death penalty, this one certainly did. Has the Judicial system in Danville gotten soft?

Maybe one of the Aids infested guys in the joint will take a liking to him and give him a list of things he can and cannot do. That way he will truly be a condemed prisoner and we would not have to worry about this guy living long. Or get him a date with sulu69.

Well….let’s see…..Jesus wouldn’t have slaughtered his girlfriend with a knife.
It’s not about Jesus, so stop with that. Why is it when things happen people in this town throw it on “Jesus” to solve? It’s part of what keeps Danville weird. Come up with solutions yourself instead of always going….“gee, I dunno….wwjd?“
It’s about us taxpayers not wanting to support him/feed him for the rest of his life when he will never be a contributing part of society…..I doubt that he ever was.

Everyone keeps saying how Mr. Jones should die, then we have some referring to God, mentioning an eye for an eye, I knew Miss Saunders personally and it trully hurts to know that she is gone, but at the same time the comments that are being posted hurts even more. Who are we to judge, he did what he did and in the end, God will punish him for that, the judge gave his sentence that’s all we can do, but killing him is not going to bring Precious back, it’ not going to take away the pain in her family’s heart nor the fact that her son will never see her again. Not only will all of us go through this, Mr. Jones will also endure that pain for the rest of his life. Instead of talking about an eye for an eye, how about, WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?

For all of you who are talking about the death penalty and why it wasnt used is because this was not a Capital Case. You have to be charged with Cpital Murder to get the death penalty. 1st degree nurder caries a Max penalty of life in prison with no parole.
