Copper thieves strike again

Early Thursday morning, thieves stole four cooper downspouts and copper from an air-conditioning unit at the Danville Register & Bee. The items taken were valued at $5,000, according to police.

Danville Police are looking into more copper theft incidents that took place over the last couple of days.
Lt. Mike Mondul said Leland Tile Company, on Industrial Avenue and the copper coils and tubing from a two ton air conditioners behind the business were stolen.
The copper from two heat pump units was stolen from behind the residence on the 300 block of Holbrook Avenue.
First Baptist Church on Main Street has copper from the air conditioning unit stolen from behind the church.
All in One Barber Shop on Craghead Street had copper coils from a three-ton air conditioning unit were stolen from the rear of the business.

A Danville church and two businesses were targeted by copper thieves late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.
Two copper downspouts were stolen from First Presbyterian Church on Main Street, according to a news release from the Danville Police Department.
Copper also was stripped from two 4-ton air-conditioning units at Dr. Daniel Pomposini’s office at 125 Watson St., police said.
In addition, the copper coils were removed from the air-conditioning units at an office at 500 N. Main St., police said.
Lt. Mike Mondul said that an investigation is under way to determine whether the three incidents are related.
Anyone with information about the thefts is encouraged to call Danville Crime Stoppers at (434) 793-0000, and may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

This doesn’t sound like a bunch of amateur crack heads, but rather an experienced person or persons who know what they are looking for, and where to look. I’m sure if a modest reward was offered for information leading to the arrest of these culprits, anonymous tips will start to come in, after all their is no honor among thieves, as the saying goes. My mother always said “somebody knows something about.“ it.

This is very sad. We have to go to work to provide for our families and a few numb-skulls think that it is alright to steal from homes, churches and businesses of people who try to do the right thing. What are we to do? Just about every home in Danville is a target because of AC units. What are we to do to protect what we work so hard to provide?

As a homeowner who’s been hit not once, but twice in the last 6 months, I would love to read an article with an update from the police. Because the police officers that filed our report were not too helpful (especially since we had one of the culprits and his tools in custody and still they didn’t do much). And obviously it’s one of the bigger problems in Danville so they should pay closer attention to each case. As mentioned by the above poster, what about the places that BUY this stolen copper? You should do an investigative piece on that!

The police should also be concerned about the places in town that buy copper from these people that are stealing it.

I have to agree with this comment.Its sad but people are going to any length to support themselves or habbits they may have. The economy is at it’s lowest in the 30 yrs I have been alive. I can recall gas being a mere $1.80 back in 2000. I don’t look forward to what our lives are going to be like 10 yrs from now. Americans think it’s bad now.

I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN TOLD WHEN THE ECONOMY IS BAD THE AMOUNT OF CRIME GOES UP. I GUESS IT HELPS THAT THE PRICE OF COPPER HAS SKY ROCKETED AND IT APPEARS TO BE EASY PICKINGS BY THE NUMBER OF REPORTS OF COOPER BEING TAKEN THIS YEAR. IF PEOPLE CAN’T FIND WORK THEY WILL STEAL TO FEED THEMSELVES. OR MAYBE IT IS JUST A BUNCH OF CRACK HEADS TRYING TO GET ENOUGH MONEY TOGETHER FOR A FEW ROCKS?
