Keeping a secret isn’t easy, especially when many on the Citizen of the Year Award committee members see the recipient daily. Nevertheless, Frank R. Campbell said he had no inkling he was being honored at the 77th Annual Citizenship Award Dinner held Thursday night at the Danville Golf Club.
“Jay Hayes told me that Kiwanis was starting a new tradition of having a guest speaker give the introductory prayer and asked me to lead it,” Campbell said. “I know now that I can’t trust my friends, as they will hide things from you.”
Kiwanis President Lorri Sampson said the award committee had to comb through numerous nomination applications, weighing each candidate by five predetermined categories: career and professional accomplishments; demonstration of religious and family values; participation in cultural/educational and civic growth; public service and leadership positions; and citizenship recognition.
Without letting loose an identity, committee member Dr. Betty Jo Foster rolled off a litany of qualities the honored person possessed. Foregoing further suspense, Campbell was tapped as the Danville Kiwanis Club 2008 Citizen of the Year.
Amongst the Roanoke native’s many accomplishments are a doctorate in theology from Southeastern Theological Seminary, his tenure as president of Averett University, trustee to Wake Forest University and interim president of Gardner-Webb University.
Campbell also has acted as chairman of the United Fund, president of the Chamber of Commerce and in various capacities for Danville’s First Baptist Church, sitting on the Board of Deacons and Finance Committee.
Presently, Campbell serves as chairman of the board of directors for Danville Regional Medical Center. He said his proudest accomplishments are his two children, four grandchildren and 51-year marriage to wife, Janet.
“I feel honored to have been recognized by such a giving group,” Campbell said. “These are my peers. I am very blessed and thankful.”
