A house on West Broad Street suffered heavy damage after a suspicious fire Thursday afternoon.

Heavy fire and smoke was pouring out of the home at 1030 West Broad St., Assistant Chief Steve Dishman said. The incident was reported about 3:15 p.m.

The first firefighting units to arrive were able to get the blaze under control in about 15 minutes, Dishman said. The house suffered heavy damage to the kitchen and exterior wall. Heat and smoke damage were reported throughout the house, he added.

Three engines, a ladder truck and four support units assisted, along with 19 fire department personnel. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
