Artists come together at Prizery to create a community

SOUTH BOSTON — The Prizery in South Boston is busy this week preparing for a gallery reception in the lower level of the building on Friday.

The newly formed Convergence Art Guild is hosting a reception event at 7 p.m. in order to interact with the community and hopeful new members. The reception is open to the public and will feature artwork from several of the guild’s current members.

On Monday, two of the guild members were setting things up.

Tammie Mabe and Ron Miller are two local artists who have a vision of bringing the artists in the area together and giving them a place to gather, work and teach.

Miller said he envisions a place where artists are working on pieces while others have coffee and talk.

He said that the guild would love to be able to offer full-time art classes to the public.

Mabe said that offering classes is one of the group’s main drives because right now there is no way for home-schooled children to get the art classes they need from actual artists. She also mentioned the desire to offer classes to the local nursing homes.

The guild is accepting all artists. Members range from painters and glass artists to sculptors and musicians.

There is no permanent building for the guild yet, but members have a few options they are looking into. The guild is still in the beginning stages and the growth still depends on private donations at this point.
