NORFOLK, Va. (AP) _ From the lower Chesapeake to the southern Virginia coast, volunteers will be watching the surf for dolphins on Saturday.

The Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Team will conduct its 16th annual dolphin count from 16 observation posts along beaches and from boats. The boats will primarily be off the Eastern Shore.

The count not only sizes up the region’s dolphin population, but also where their habitat is located.

Seventy-five volunteers will be part of the Saturday count. The aquarium team will also have an educational outreach on the Virginia Beach boardwalk near the fishing pier.

A rain date is scheduled for Sunday.
