Residents gather at memorial to remember fallen heroes
The Danville-Pittsylvania County Veterans Memorial had a steady stream of visitors Monday, as friends, family members and patriots came to pay respect to those who served in the U.S. military.
Holiday weekend pool openings in Rockingham kick off swim season
Jerry Talley, manager of the Reidsville Swim Club, said few club members dallied on making their first trip to the pool.
“We opened Saturday, and we had a pretty good crowd,” Talley said. “That surprised me because it was cool that morning, but by the end of the day, it warmed up and we had a crowd.”
Rockingham County veterans honored in Memorial Day service
James Wood still recalls his days of service overseas and can often be found sharing those memories with friends at Dick’s Drive-In — the Eden restaurant he owned until he handed it down to two sons. But before he passed along the business, Wood began a simple tradition of placing photos of soldiers on the walls of the restaurant. He said it began about 10 years ago with some of his own memorabilia. Then a lot of customers and friends began to bring in photos for the collection and the walls filled up.

New church reaching out to the community
The leaders of a new church on Worsham Street are taking an active role in the community, and getting to know their new neighbors through free community days complete with food, a summer program for children and working with the police to help reduce crime.
Cancer walk to begin Friday at the Crossing at the Dan
The Relay itself is a walk along a specific track — for Danville and Pittsylvania County, it’s at the Carrington Pavilion at the Crossing at the Dan — that lasts all night on Friday.
