“One of the things that is really critical is cool nights,” said Howard Neufeld, a professor of plant physiology at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. “Starting in September, if it starts to get cool but not below freezing, if you have clear cool days and cool nights, it stimulates fall color.”

Menswear sales outpacing women’s

Steve Hale has discovered a reason to splurge on clothing again: the slim silhouette in suits to shirts that’s replacing the baggier fits of past years. But his wife, Cathy, has slashed her monthly apparel spending, saying she’s “bored” by what’s out there.

His clear gray eyes are crinkled at the corners from years of squinting into sun-baked square holes at digs across North Carolina and South Carolina. Michael O. “Mo” Hartley peers through wire-rimmed glasses at the small bit of white that appears beneath a student’s trowel.

It’s easy to get caught up in the romance of wedding planning, says Barbara Cameron, the author of The Everything Weddings on a Budget Book, especially if you have celebrity-style aspirations - you know, the kind of wedding reception with ice sculptures spouting top-shelf martinis, a cigar-rolling station and a petting zoo for the kids?

Rockingham bug lovers can get up close and personal with their favorite critters

If you like things that creep and crawl, you have two opportunities this weekend to get up close. Bugs of all kinds will be on display and available for touching, if you dare, at the annual Insectaphobia.

One woman. One crockpot. One year.

For Stephanie O’Dea, life’s a Crock (Pot). She started cooking with a slow cooker in college for convenience, she continued as a newlywed for economy and kept at it for a challenge.  It landed her on Rachael Ray’s daytime TV show and earned her a following on her Web site, A Year of Crockpotting ( http://www.crockpot365.blogspot.com).

Day 23: Clean-out-your-pantry minestrone

This is an easy recipe — and one that can be thrown together in no time. I happened to have leftover roasted veggies in the fridge, but you can use frozen or fresh instead. I choose to not thaw frozen vegetables before putting them in the crockpot and leave them in for the entire cooking time. Some people don’t like that, though, and thaw and stir in at the very end. Your choice. This can definitely be assembled the night before for an easy morning plug-in.

Day 123: Crock-Pot fried rice

You can use your leftovers to make fried rice. For reals. In the crockpot. I know! It totally blew my mind, too.

Day 158: Crock-Pot chocolate Frito candy

I saw this recipe posted on a site, and knew we had to make it. We just had to.
