DANVILLE — Three Little Theatre of Danville actors have received awards for their work during the 2007-2008 season.
Douglas Kendall Adams was named outstanding actor for his portrayal of the desk clerk Ferris in the comedy “Bedside Manners” by Derek Benfield, directed by Alan G. Holt. Adams also appeared as the emcee in “Cabaret.”
Allison Beyer was named outstanding actress for her portrayal of Sally Bowles in the musical “Cabaret” by Joe Masteroff, directed by Crystal Gregory and Michael
Edwards.
Madalyn Mohamed was honored for outstanding contribution and dedication to the Little Theatre of Danville for her work as vocal coach in “Cabaret.” Mohamed also portrayed Fraulein Kost in “Cabaret” and was nominated for Best Actress for her role as Sally in “Bedside Manners.”
Other nominees for best actor and best actress this season were Steve Petrick and Patsi Compton as Sidney Bruehl and Myra Bruehl in “Deathtrap” and Douglas Adams, who was also nominated for best actor for his role as the emcee in “Cabaret.”
The awards are voted upon by the directors of each season’s productions, and are presented at the annual picnic/board meeting that culminates the season.
Averett holding auditions for shows
DANVILLE — Averett University’s Theatre Department is holding auditions for two upcoming shows, “Aesop and Friends” and “Salute to Broadway.”
Auditions by appointment for the musical review “Salute to Broadway” are currently under way, and will continue tonight and Friday and Monday, followed by an open audition at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Averett’s Grousbeck
Music Center.
Those interested should have one song prepared, preferably a Broadway musical, and should bring their sheet music.

The show runs Nov. 13-16 on Averett’s Pritchett Auditorium stage.
Auditions for “Aesop and Friends” will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 2 in Averett’s Pritchett Auditorium for ages 18 and up.
It explores five of Aesop’s fables, including “The Ant and the Grasshopper,” “The Fox and the Crow,” “The Two Stubborn Goats,” “The Fox and the Grapes” and “The Tortoise and the Hare.”
The show runs Oct. 2-4.

Lynchburg Symphony to open season
LYNCHBURG — The Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra will celebrate its 25th season with a concert of American music featuring NASA astronaut and Lnchburg native Leland Melvin.
Melvin will narate the concert, which will feature Aaron Copeland’s “A Lincoln Portrait,” which draws material from Lincoln’s speeches and letters and quotes folk songs from the period, along with works by Dike Ellington and other American composers.
The concert starts at 8 p.m. Sept. 6 at E.C. Glass Auditorium, Lynchburg.

Opera to return to Danville theater
DANVILLE — The Metropolitan Opera will return to the silver screen for its third season with shows airing live locally at Danville Stadium Cinemas.
The season, which is shown at more than 440 theaters nationwide, will kick off with an Opening Night Gala Sept. 22, featuring soprano Renee Fleming in scenes from Verdi’s “La Traviata,” Massenet’s “Manon” and Richard Strauss’s “Caprioccio.”
Other transmissions will include:

> “Doctor Atomic,” 1 p.m. Nov. 8;
> “La Damnation de Faust,” 1 p.m. Nov. 22;
> “Thais,” noon Dec. 20;

> “La Cenerentola,” 12:30 p.m. May 9.
“The audience for opera is growing with each new movie theater that joins our network,” said Met General Manager Peter Gelb. “Our expanded lineup of 11 live high-definition transmissions will bring many of the highlights of our Met season to the
nation’s opera lovers.”
